Due to their high energy processing capacity, long and stable lifetime performance, and low capacitance of less than 2 pF, 2036 SM devices are ideal for board-level protection for high bandwidth applications such as xDSL, wireline broadband, and high speed Ethernet.

The Bourns Subminiature gts family is only 5mm in diameter, making it the smallest high-performance gts in the telecom industry. Bourns gts is designed to prevent damage caused by transient disturbances, acting as a "crowbar" during conduction, generating a short circuit to the ground. When a voltage transient surge exceeds the defined GDT breakdown voltage level, the device will be ionized and conduction will occur within a fraction of a microsecond. When the surge passes and the system voltage returns to normal, the GDT returns to the high impedance (off) state.
